Whalehaven is named after the seaside town that provides a haven or safe area for the Southern Right Whales to annually migrate for breeding. Located at the entrance to the wine valley and within a few minutes drive from the viewing point where one can catch site of these majestic figures, Whalehaven is a boutique winery that is inspired by nature. The area is famous for french style Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. In keeping with the terroir, the wines from Whalehaven are styled along classic French lines and target the elegance and reserve of fine Burgundies. The Pinot Noir is almost immediately sold out due to high demand in the Cape Town market for this varietal and its superb balance and expressive bouquet. It is an extremely food friendly wine that can be paired easily with any meat dish.
The winery is owned by the Bottega family who produce a diverse and exciting collection of wines, including the prestigious Idiom label which is created in a more new world style.
Whalehaven has long been renowned for its elegant Pinot Noir, rich Chardonnay and its spicy Cabernet Franc. The ripe & delicious Viognier-Chardonnay on the other hand exhibits more of the flair and fruit of the new world. It is an enticing wine and one of the first Viogniers made in the Cape. The dry and delightful Rosé boasts fields of strawberries.
This quaint winery also has popular table wines, which are great value for money, including the Old Harbour Red which celebrates the heritage of this seaside towns first harbour built in 1885.
